The Biblical View of Faith:
The Difference Between
Faith and Mere Belief

Excerpted from The King James Version Defended by Edward F. Hills

What is the difference between faith and doubting? Many Christians are unable to answer this question because they confuse divine, God-given faith with mere animal or human belief. Animal belief arises spontaneously out of habit. If you put your dog's food in a certain bowl, he will soon believe that this is the place to go when hungry. But if you stop putting food in the bowl, his belief will begin to give place to doubt and will eventually cease. Our human beliefs likewise arise involuntarily out of our experience. For example, unless we are very ill or in great danger, we cannot help believing that we will be alive tomorrow, because this has always been our experience. Yet we cannot be sure. So when we believe anything , we partly doubt it, and when we doubt anything we partly believe it.

But our faith in God is different from all our other beliefs. For otherwise this faith would be in part a doubting, and our thinking would be no better than a dog's. God is the Truth, the Supreme Reality on which all other realities depend. A God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He (Deut. 32:4). And because God is most real, we must believe in Him as such. We must let nothing else be more real to us than God. For this is faith! Anything less than this would be doubting. We must make God and Jesus Christ His Son the starting point of all our thinking.

We see, then, the difference between the carnally minded man and the spiritually minded man. The carnally minded man begins his thinking with something other than God and then believes in God merely as a probability or a possibility. Hence he cannot distinguish between believing and doubting. All his beliefs are doubtful. The spiritual man takes God and Jesus Christ His Son as the starting point of all his thinking...

Tracy's Note: I hasten to add that the only way to know God is through His word, the Bible. It is our starting point and it is the foundation of all truth. Jesus said to the Father, "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy WORD is truth." Some people say that they worship God and in the same breath they say that they do not believe the whole Bible. Or perhaps there are things in the Bible they disagree with. Maybe they want to add doctrines to it like Mary worship. It doesn't work like that--you take it all or you reject it. The Bible says that God has magnified His word above all His name! If you want to know the truth, the Bible is where you find it. God rejects all false worship for it is based on a lie and "no lie is of the truth" (I John 2:21). Jesus Christ, the Word of God, is the Supreme Reality that undergirds ALL Christian thinking. The Bible is THE standard of truth.

In order to know our Creator, Jesus Christ, we must start with the basic assumption that the Holy Bible is truly the word of God. It is the only way that we can know Jesus. There is no other way. No real Christian will kick the Bible to the curb. It is THE source of truth--How do I know that sodomy is wrong? The Bible. How do I know that stealing is wrong? The Bible. How do I know that murder is wrong? The Bible. How do I know adultery and lying are wrong? The Bible. It ain't none of this make-up-the-rules-as-you-go. The rules are found in the Holy Bible. God is holy and He has set forth, for the world to see, a complete and inerrant record of His requirements--in the King James Bible. You will be Judged by that Book--

John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

For the scoffers out there, it is totally reasonable to put faith in God and the Bible. You put your faith in man all the time. When you go to school and the teacher passes out your math textbook, you do not question the veracity of its contents, you simply have faith that the author knew what he was doing. You don't go picking apart every syllable and trying to rise up against the author. You take his word for it (and many times you really shouldn't. people tell a lotta lies.) A Bible believing Christian, on the other hand, places faith in the word of God. The Lord Jesus is trustworthy. He made us. He is gracious, kind and all-knowing. He is powerful. He is a strong tower. The Bible was the first book ever printed on a printing press. To this day, it is the most read, the most translated, the most awesome Book in the world.

For the cultist and pretend Christians, a last warning: the Lord Jesus will not accept worship based on a lie such as Catholicism, Jehovah's Witness, Mormonism, Buddhism, etc. for, "...the true worshippers SHALL worship the Father is spirit and in TRUTH: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him MUST worship him in spirit and in TRUTH." (John 4:23-24).
